Postgraduate Studies Program
The course "Basic knowledge of Cardiovascular Medicine" covers the main principles of the physiology of the cardiovascular system, the methods of clinical and laboratory investigation of cardiovascular diseases, and the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of the entire spectrum of the heart and peripheral vessels.
The course "Basic knowledge of Nephrology" includes the physiology of the kidney, methods of assessing renal function, and diseases of the kidney and renal vessels.
The course "Basic knowledge of Pharmacology" covers the mechanisms of action, indications, and contraindications of drugs used in cardiovascular medicine.
The course "Basic knowledge of imaging medicine" analyzes the modern imaging methods used in cardiovascular medicine (ultrasound, CT and magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, etc.) focusing on the principles of operation, the indications, and the correct way of evaluating them.
The course "Basic principles of treatment of cardiovascular diseases" analyzes the modern therapeutic approach in individual cardiovascular diseases at the level of pharmaceutical and non-pharmacological intervention.
The course "Basic nutritional principles" analyzes the structure of modern nutrition, the energy value of foods, the characteristics of the main diets, and the principles of healthy dietary therapy in cardiovascular prevention.
The course "Epidemiology of arterial hypertension" includes epidemiological data on the prevalence and incidence of hypertension in Greece and worldwide, the correlations with other comorbidities, and data on cardiovascular, renal, and overall prognosis of hypertensive patients.
The course "Causes of hypertension" analyzes the entire etiology of hypertension, including the idiopathic form and its secondary forms.
The course "Physiology-Pathophysiology of Hypertension" includes the complex pathophysiological mechanisms of development and progression of idiopathic and secondary hypertension and its complications.
The course "Diagnostic approach to idiopathic and secondary hypertension" analyzes the correct way to approach hypertensive patient at a clinical and laboratory level to establish the diagnosis of hypertension, find its etiology and assess damage to target organs.
The course "Cardiovascular complications of hypertension" aims to educate on the investigation and management of subclinical and clinical damage to the target organs of hypertension.
The course "Renal complications of hypertension" includes the mechanisms, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic approach to the effect of hypertension on the kidneys and their vessels.
The course "Stroke and hypertension" analyzes the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical and imaging features, and diagnostic options of strokes occurring in hypertensive patients.
The course "Healthy Dietary Interventions and Hypertension" analyzes the health-dietary measures of hypertension management, the expected benefits, and the limitations of patient compliance.
The course "Pharmaceutical treatment of hypertension" describes the 1st and 2nd line antihypertensive drugs (mechanisms of action, side effects, interactions, dosage), their application algorithms, the proposed combinations, and the relevant recommendations from the guidelines.
The course "Invasive hypertension treatment" includes both the invasive methods of treating secondary hypertension (renal artery angioplasty, etc.) and the newest methods of treating primary hypertension (renal artery denervation, arteriovenous communication, etc.)
The course "Emergency Hypertension" covers hypertensive attacks and analyzes their classification, approach to the emergency department, and application of treatment.
The course "Biostatistics and research methodology" includes the general principles of statistics in medicine, the correct evaluation of scientific works, the types of research in cardiovascular medicine, methods of study design, and the use of basic statistical methods as well as master statistics packages for conducting research.
The "Internship" course includes training in regular hypertension outpatient clinics, in the emergency department, and in nephrology units where the students acquire the necessary skills in the management of hypertensive patients, and cardiovascular and renal complications as well as in dealing with emergencies in hypertension.
In the Fourth Semester, the student will work on a thesis (research paper, literature review, or meta-analysis) on a topic related to the wider field of hypertension and the accompanying cardiovascular-kidney diseases under the supervision of the Supervising Professor.
